Matt's Journey

Matt is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretary and has worked as a CFO, Acting CEO, Sales and Marketing Leader, HR and Risk expert and Company Director for well over 30 years across and beyond Australia.

Matt commenced his career in 1986 with a leading Chartered Accounting firm which later merged with Arthur Andersen & Co and where he worked on the audit of News Corporation for six years.  He then set up a specialist audit practice at a six partner firm - within one year it was the highest billing team and Matt also became the firm's highest individual biller.  Matt was then promoted to head of “Special Projects”, providing SMEs with technically demanding litigation support, forensic accounting, valuation and business restructuring services.

Matt was then headhunted at the end of 1997 to join IPMG, one of Australia’s largest printing and publishing businesses, where he established and managed a Shared Corporate Services team to support five SME business units, including IPMG's digital publishing operations.

From 2001 to 2004 Matt turned around a major inbound tour operator with Japanese and US operations, which included the detection and rectification of over $9m in accounting misstatements, the recovery of over $3m in fraudulently obtained funds and migrating the business to new systems and premises.  Matt was also promoted to General Manager while he rightsized and recapitalised the business.

Having also qualified as a Chartered Secretary and Certified Internal Auditor by 2004, Matt then became the CFO and Company Secretary for a small listed IT services company operating in Australia and Hong Kong.  This gave Matt insights into the pros and cons of ASX listings for emerging businesses, while he was also earning his Master’s degree in law.

Moving to Melbourne at the end of 2007, Matt joined the world’s leading outplacement services provider just before the “GFC”.  Having dealt with a large backlog of financial statements and reformed the Australia and NZ finance teams, in 2011 Matt was also made Head of Sales and Marketing for six months, with a remit to turn around a disengaged and underachieving team.  In 2012 and 2013 Matt took over all Corporate Services including HR and IT and oversaw the closure of the unprofitable NZ business. Matt also assisted with special projects in Japan, China, Singapore and the USA.

In 2014 Matt was hired by Tim Sternberg as National Director for the Accounting Recruitment Division of Randstad, the world's largest recruitment business, leading 40 staff based in five offices down the East Seaboard.  Matt addressed very high staff turnover and poor leadership and returned the division to profitability before leaving when it was merged with another division.

Matt worked from 2016 until 2019 in the Not for Profit sector, where he addressed significant accounting misstatements and introduced contemporary commercial practices.
