What do you enjoy most about working with small and medium sized businesses?

I value working directly with the Business Owners and understanding what makes them tick.

Whilst financial performance is obviously important, I have come to realise that for most it is not the only important metric. Recognising this has allowed me to tailor my advice to ensure it is consistent with their values.

The relationship you develop with SME clients and business owners means that you ride the highs and lows and genuinely feel a part of their business.

Which of your “business values” do you think is most important to you, and why?

Without a doubt, trust.

Accountants and advisers are privy to some of their clients’ most sensitive information, and it is paramount that clients can trust their adviser with that information.

As an adviser you need to trust that clients are being open and transparent such that you can advise them accordingly, based on full and frank information.

Without both parties trusting each other, the adviser and client relationship does not work effectively.

What is the most common misunderstanding that clients have about what consultants in your field do?

The biggest misunderstanding is that accountants just do tax returns and financial statements… whilst I have done my fair share of both, most of our value is added by assisting clients managing their business affairs. This occurs in many ways, such as through corporate structuring, tax planning, reviewing asset protection positions, introduction of people within networks or just being present to listen to clients and provide insights where possible.
